Buttonwillow Raceway May 2003
We are back in Buttonwillow (my favourite
so far) once again for a really long time...I haven't had the chance to
run here since last year so I was anxious to get here and run the full
3 mile course again. Since last track event, I have installed new brake
lines/fluids/pads/rotors as well as new alignment specs....OOOO the possibilities!!!
The Rex and M3 get ready to get on track....I carried my R compounds to the track this time....these babies wear out so quick...I can't afford to waste them on the highway. Overall the car was very satisfying to drive but a few things got in the way of driving at 100%.
1: The new pads apparently still had teh chamferred edges so I had to take a session at 80% pace to let the pads set which was a bit of a let down...once I felt like they were set, the brakes became Steaming Hot after just 3 hot laps....brakes faded pretty bad...possbily the pads were overheated.
2. Having to flip my tyres to get more life out of them was a bi%ch
3. The suspension really isn't stiff enough...the car dived, swayed and squatted like a maxima. On fast transitions, I had to make sure I make weight-shifts smoothly so i don't lose the rear-end..this really hurt my times as the car was soo heavy that it just swung left and right..making the car very unstable....
4. The steering wheel is just too big...I had such a hard time steering this thing in tight corners
Some improvements:
1. The alignment worked perfect with the tyres...excellent grip..NO understeer unless I enter corners wayyy too fast...very very good! Thanks to Darin of West End Perfomrnace Alignment for the tips! Tyre wear was very nice and even too..no chunking !
2. The car was doing 115 or 120 at the end of teh main striaght which is the fastest I've ever gone before I had to brake early (stupid brakes) or i think i can go a little faster....
3. The car's balance was right on par..it was just perfect...everything reacted the way I wanted...truly a blast to finally have fine-tuned my car...but now i need stiffer suspension...so the fight goes on! Cool Willy Pads here I come!
The Rex gang plus my little blue bird.....What a blast!!
